Magical Herzegovina

Small area on this planet Earth where people have been stealing soil from the rock for centuries, where golden sun ball has been shining by the same literary shine and pearly rivers and emerald lakes have been keeping green vineyards and yellow fields alive, the land between freezing northern mountains and warm southern sea waves, the place described by many great writers and poets... that is Herzegovina.

I have been thinking lately if I am already writing a travel blog and if I want to show everyone amazing places and experiences connected to it, if I want to offer something fulfilling and magical, an inside view of my happy place (world), why not show you my favorite one?! To travel is amazing, but to love and live your home is simply overwhelming. And I indeed love mine, so welcome to my home - magical Herzegovina!

Breathtaking sunsets make the city of Mostar even more mysterious and oriental

This geographic region in the southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina (it's in Europe, and not in war for 22 years already - just to make it clear in the beginning) has had a history abundant with contrasts and whims, whose traces are visible all around in customs, architecture, traditional costumes, music expressions and people. Amazing mixture of many different cultures, religions, and nations all through the history, brought here by powerful emperors of the histories strongest empires, monarchies and kingdoms, overwhelming knowledge and life experience of one of the most hospitable people ever who will gladly share their stories with you and unselfishly give a small bit of themselves to every person they meet, this makes Herzegovina definitely worth a visit. Along with natural untouched beauty and richness of different unique and endangered species, this small wine region will be a real discovery for every real traveler.

Kravica waterfalls, green oasis in the heart of Herzegovina

Since I wanted to start writing about and showing you my region, and really did not know where to start, I am going to start with a locality I visited in last couple of days - Kravica waterfalls. It was a hot summer day, and the idea of taking a dip under the breathtaking waterfall seemed a perfect way to spend the afternoon. When I think about it, it's only natural to start with water. Civilizations arose and vanished because of water and around water, it is the main cause of wars and truces, this perfect Perpetuum mobile, this eternal life keeper... The water, gathered and cherished from ancient times by the man of Herzegovina, inseparable of the being itself, with so many spiritual Symbolics as the source of life, means of purification and renewal... Yes, it is the best way to start, I'm sure.

Stretching over 120m square and falling from a 25m high hill, Kravica waterfalls are large tufa cascade on the river Trebižat, precisely in the heart of karstic Herzegovina. Situated 10km south of Ljubuški and 40km south of Mostar, it is one of the largest, and definitely most impressive waterfall in this area, already known for rivers and waterfalls as natural companions of mountains. Even though it is a mountain area there still exists a big influence of Mediterranean climate which makes summers in this region extremely hot.

Hajdučka vrata, hiking in Herzegovina can be a magnificent experience

It is enough to say that the capital city of Herzegovina, Mostar, is the hottest city in the world in certain parts of summer and the Neretva river, flowing through that same city is the coldest one in the world, according to the "Science Blurtit" from the UK. Ladies and gentlemen, we have it all.

Anyways, high summer temperatures and the perfect purity and freshness of this landscape and water are the reasons because of which Kravica is amongst favorite beaches and picnic places for locals and tourists as well. Here, right next to the cascades, you can find a few restaurants and cafes offering delicious traditional and international dishes. Besides that, there's even a place to pitch a tent, so feel welcome!

To be honest, during the summer, especially during the weekend days, this place will probably be crowded but hey, if you accidentally pass by on the weekend day, don't feel discouraged, it is still worth visiting and I'm sure you'll enjoy it either way. There is no public transport to this place though, but many tourist agencies and groups are organizing field trips there, so it is not a problem to find a way to go. If, on the other hand, going by a personal car, don't worry about parking place cause there is a large parking area at the top and parking it is free of charge. But you will have to pay the entrance which costs around 3 Euros per person, but frankly, this beauty is worth much more, and that money you give will be used to enhance it even more.

Kravica means "Little cow" in Croatian, by the way

To talk about it is one thing, but to show - completely different. That's why I will leave you with this short video we made along the way and hope you enjoy it. If you have any comments or tips if you've been there already, feel free to write!
